BP Shortcuts Led to Deepwater Tragedy According to Government Panel Report
In this age of calls for deregulation of industry, it is ironic that BP and its contractors were in violation of seven federal regulations at the time of the Deepwater Horizon disaster. If BP, Haliburton and Transocean can’t follow current federal regulations regarding safe operations, well pressure and testing for health and environmental protection levels, how does deregulating and gutting the Coast Guard and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Regulation and Enforcement make us safer? 11 lives were lost and 5 million barrels of crude oil poured into the Gulf of Mexico at the failed Macondo well. Why would we think the result would be different if we lessened the regulatory requirements on these companies? https://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/15/science/earth/15spill/
